1998 Faculty Talon Award
Professor Levow was honored as the first faculty recipient of the Talon
Award for exceptional leadership, commitment, and service to FAU
Students.
The Talon Awards are given annually during Homecoming by the FAU
Student
Government Homecoming Committee and the FAU National Alumni
Association.
Prof. Levow was recognized particularly for his service as a freshman
advisor
and for his efforts in offering the bachelor's degree in computer
science
on the Davie Campus.
The Citation
Dr. Roy B. Levow is a professor in the Department of Computer Science
and
Engineering in the College of Engineering. He came to FAU in 1970
from the University of Hawaii, where he was an assistant professor of
mathematics.
Dr. Levow joined the University as a faculty member in the Department
of
Mathematics and later served as its chairperson. As the field of
computer science at FAU evolved to become what is now the Department of
Computer Science and Engineering, he became a member of that
department.
In response to a proposal he prepared, the Department was authorized to
offer courses leading ot the bachelor of science degree in computer
science
on the Davie Campus. He now serves as the department's associate
chair for Broward programs. Dr. Levow received his bachelor's
degree
and his Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics at the University of
Pennsylvania.
As a dedicated freshman advisor, Dr. Levow is especially well known
to FAU students. He has served on many committees important
to the university, including the University Senate, the University
Faculty
Council, and the Computer Advisory Committee. He has served on
the
University's Computer Network Study Task Force, the President's
Steering
Committee for Information Resource Management, and served as chair of
the
University Computing Governance Committee, Academic Subcommittee.
He is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery, the
Institute
for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the IEEE Computer Society,
the
Mathematical Association of America, and Phi Kappa Phi. In 1990
he
received the University's Prestigious College Award for Excellence in
Undergraduate
Teaching, and in 1994 was named FEEDS Outstanding Professor.
For many years, Dr. Levow's community activities have included work
as a soccer referee and referee assessor. He and his wife Esther
have two grown children.
