A doctoral student must successfully complete the qualifying examination before being admitted to candidacy. Students are required to attempt the examination at the first available opportunity after a student has completed nine credits of graduate course work beyond the Master's degree, but no later than one year after starting the program. Part I of the examination covers the following areas:

Session A:

  1. Computer Architecture
  2. Theory
  3. Algorithms

Session B:

  1. Mathematics
  2. Data Structures
  3. Operating Systems
