Bassem Alhalabi, Ph.D., RL Cofounder/Director & Senior Research Scientist

Primary research focus: The development of Pragmatic Industrial and Educational Systems, System Level Analysis and Integration, Data Acquisition and Control, Computer-based Automation, Mobile Computing, Distance Learning and Remote Laboratories, and Hybrid Neural Nets. Dr. Alhalabi has published extensively in a diverse area of education, computing, and research. He has also presented numerous pages at the international, national, and regional level. Dr. Alhalabi has developed and enhanced undergraduate and graduate courses. He has also founded multiform labs in five universities, and currently is in charge of the state-of-the-art Senior Project Laboratory at FAU. He is a member of several honor and professional societies. He is the cofounder of Remote Labs (RL) that is the driving force of CADET. Dr. Alhalabi received BS and an MS in electrical engineering from Ohio University and Purdue University, respectively, and an MS and a PhD in computer engineering from the University of Southwestern Louisiana.

Primary research focus:  The area of creativity and the use of technologies in meaningful ways to help educate the human mind.   Dr. M. K. Hamza is an Assistant Professor of Educational Technology and Research at Florida Atlantic. He taught and chaired the Computer Sciences & Technologies department at a state college level for eight years before moving to Florida in 1997. He was awarded the Excellence & Outstanding Service Award for four consecutive years at Western Oklahoma State College. At Tomball College, he was nominated for the Teacher of the Year Award in 1996 and 1997. He was the sole developer of four new academic programs (1990 - 1997) approved and passed by the state of Oklahoma and the state of Texas. He also worked as a systems analyst/ programmer in industry for 6 years prior to teaching. In 1996, he graduated Ph.D. in Educational Psychology & Foundations from Texas A&M University with specializations in intelligence, creativity, and learning technologies.  He earned three Master’s Degrees, from University of Oklahoma & Friends University: Instructional Technology and Psychology; Management Information Systems; and Management Science; and Bachelor’s Degree from Friends University & Wichita State University in Computer Science and Mathematics. His interests and specializations are: cognition & instruction, creative thinking, systematic instructional design, distance educational technologies (remote labs) and innovative technologies. With over 150 publications, presentations, and workshops in the area of creativity, education, and computing, Dr. Hamza pursues his passion of teaching and fostering creative thinking environments, and researching for innovative and divergent ways of enhancing the learning experience.

Sam Hsu, Ph.D., NKN Coordinator &  Senior Research Scientist

Primary research focus: Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Computer Networking, and Internet-based Distance Learning, including both instructional and infrastructural networking issues. He has published over 20 refereed journal/conference papers in these areas. Dr. Hsu has taught and developed several graduate, undergraduate, and continuing education courses at FAU. Dr. Hsu has been actively participating in a wide-range of education-related workshops focusing on from improving personal teaching skills to long-range organizational efforts in integrating technology into education, including those for improving undergraduate education nation-wide, and for helping minority students in improving their academic performance and retention rates in engineering education. Dr. Hsu is a seasoned technical manager. He worked as a computer laboratory manager for five years before. He also has close ties to local industries engaging in joint projects that have practical applications. Dr. Hsu received his Ph.D degree in Computer Engineering in 1993, Master's degree in Computer Systems in 1984, both from Florida Atlantic University, and B.S. degree from Chinese Military Academy, Taiwan, in 1968. He is a member of ACM, IEEE, and Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society.

David Marcovitz, Ph.D., Senior Research Scientist

Dr. David M. Marcovitz is Coordinator of Graduate Programs in Educational Technology at Loyola College in Maryland. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in all aspects of educational technology, emphasizing the role of technology in transforming K-12 schools and classrooms. His research interests include support for technology in the schools and distance education.  Dr. Marcovitz has taught at Florida Atlantic University in Davie, Florida, and Poinciana High School in Kissimmee, Florida. He received his Ph.D. in Educational Technology in 1994 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also has an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Maria Petrie, Ph.D.,  Associate Professor, MM Coordinator, Senior Research Scientist

Primary research focus: Analysis, modeling, and formalization of software systems (e.g., database authorization systems, ecological systems, parallel/distributed systems, and multimedia/hypertext systems); and software development processes (e.g., integrating formal and non-formal software development techniques).  Her publications include papers and books on teaching software engineering, computer science, and computer graphics, computing ethics and mathematics.   She was a co-founder of the MIRG (Method Integration Research Group) at Florida Atlantic University and she is currently supporting four research assistants.  The papers produced by the group have been published and presented in peer reviewed international conference in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, France, England and Germany.  Currently she is working towards formalization and real-time extensions to the Unified Modeling Language (UML is the new standard notation for object-oriented models) and building a tool to provide automated support.  In addition, she is examining how to apply visualization to software engineering with the goal of incorporating the results into the graphical user interface of the new tool we are developing, called IconSEE++.  All her professional career she has been active in curriculum writing and pedagogy.

Samer Aoudi received a B.A. in Business Administration from the America University of Beirut. He pursued a second Bachelor in Computer Science and received his Master's Degree in Computer Engineering at Florida Atlantic University. His interests include Remote Labs, distance education, course development, JAVA communication, and networking.


Naidabel Berges

Cath Cheker

Cath Cheker worked with CADET from September 1999 through August 2000. She served as the Coordinator of Student Activities for the Broward Campuses of FAU.  She is a national lecturer for Oxford University Press. Cath earned a Master’s degree in Educational Technology and Research at Florida Atlantic University.  Cath received a BA in English, Magna Cum Laude, from Florida Atlantic University, an AA, Phi Theta Kappa Highest Honors, from Broward Community College and TOEFL/TESOL, Teacher Training Highest Honors, A.U.C.I.  Her career goal is to continue teaching teachers and inspiring them to motivate their students.

Ali M. Abu-El Humos  has worked with CADET since  September 2000. Barbara Perez

Barbara Perez has worked with CADET from September 1999 through the present. Barbara is presently pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science at Florida Atlantic University.  She earned a Master's Degree in Educational Technology and Research at Florida Atlantic University in 2000 and  earned a BBA in Accounting from Adelphi University.  Barbara’s career goal is to integrate technology in education to enhance learning for students and to provide support for fellow teachers. Her other interests include web page design and software applications.

Jeff Uchin   has worked with CADET in Fall of 1999, and then again beginning in September 2000.  He  is presently pursuing a Master’s degree in Educational Technology and Research at Florida Atlantic University.  He  received a BA in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences  from University of West Florida. Jeff currently teaches at Hallandale High School and is the head coach of  Varsity Boys Soccer. Jeff has been awarded 1998 Coach of the Year, William Randolph Hearst award for College Journalism and U.S. Army Accomodation Medal for military achievement.
