Background
This report is the first deliverable for Phase I of the grant
Application of Object-Oriented Models, Databases, and
Visualization Techniques in the Water Management Domain (FAU #1670-
051-02, SFWMD Work Order 10 and 10A), awarded by the South Florida
Water Management District (SFWMD) to Florida Atlantic University
(FAU) under the SFWMD-FAU Memorandum of Understanding. This
object-oriented modeling study complements a larger collaborative
effort to design, develop and implement an Object-Oriented South
Florida Regional Simulation Model (SFRSM). This major software
development effort includes several other contractors: Dan Sheer
and Brian McCrodden from Water Resources Management Inc (WRMI);
Marshall Taylor and Jon Behrens from Resource Planning Associates
(RPA) and Gerald Day from Riverside Technologies Inc (RTI). The
effort has been separated into the following major task,
tentatively assigned to the contractors (shown in parenthesis):
- Functional Specifications (WRMI)
- Model Structure (RPA)
- Model algorithms and Interactions (RPA)
- Design Specifications (WRMI)
- User Interface Design (RPA)
- Database Requirements, Data Collection and Database Interface Design (WRMI & RTI)
- Code Development and Testing
- Calibration
- Documentation and Training (RPA)
- Journal Articles
During this first phase the contractors are working in parallel.
WRMI's responsibility is to develop the Functional Specifications.
RPA is identifying the Object-Oriented Model Structures. RTI is
addressing the Database Requirements. Figure 1 contains the
District's and Contractor's roles in the specification, design and
development of the South Florida Regional Simulation Model. (The
potential users within the District include the Ecosystem
Restoration Department, the Planning Department, the Department of
Water Resource Management, the Regulation Department, the
Operations & Maintenance Department, and the SFWMD Governing
Board.) External potential users of the simulation model include
the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE)
and Everglades National Park (ENP).
