Department's Activities 2004-05

Bachelor in Science in Information Engineering Technology (BIET)

The Department is currently developing a new program Bachelor's in Information Engineering Technology, which will be offered on Davie and Port St. Lucie campuses in Fall 2005. The program reflects current and anticipated future trends in computer industry and provides better opportunity for Florida workforce for employment, retention, and increased earnings. The program prepares students for career in the areas of computer network, network computing, Web services, Internet programming, data and network security, database management, communications, and applied software engineering.

Weekend Master Program in Computer Science with Specialization in Internet and Web Technologies

As the cutting edge field of computer science continues to grow, in Spring 2004 the Department launched an 11-month Weekend Master’s Degree Program in Computer Science with specialization in Internet and Web technologies. The program consists of 11 courses that encompass 33 credit-hours of graduate work. Courses that comprise the program are Internet application programming, Web services, Network security, Computer networking, Wireless networks, Multimedia on the Web, and other courses. This program is tailored specifically for professionals from high-tech industries. Students attend formal classes, two weekend days a month, and the remaining classes are delivered through the latest distance learning technology, teleconferencing and state-of-the-art e-learning facilities offered through the Web. This format allows participants to pursue their academic goals while maintaining their employment. The first generation of 10 students completed the program in March 2005 (see picture), while the second group started the program in February 2005.

New Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs

The Department is presently working to revise graduate programs, both M. S. and Ph.D. programs in Computer Science and Computer Engineering. These revisions will reflect current and anticipated future trends in the computer industry, including the emergence of integration of computing and life sciences, interdisciplinary trends, the globalization of science including software and technology developments, and demands on future scientists and engineers to possess technical, communication, process and organizational skills.

The proposed curricula will include the traditional, general programs in Computer Science and in Computer Engineering and several new concentration areas, which will be added to reflect the current technology trends and to include the interdisciplinary components and approaches. Most concentration areas will include an interdisciplinary component, where students will take one course (or in some cases maximum two courses) offered by other departments. Here are some proposed areas of concentration:

1. Computing for Life Sciences (Interdisciplinary with Biology)
2. Global Software Engineering
3. Digital Media (Interdisciplinary with Communications)
4. Internet and Web Technologies (Interdisciplinary with Business IT)
5. Security Systems (Interdisciplinary with Business IT and Mathematics)
6. Forensic and Counter-Terrorist Technologies (Interdisciplinary with Criminology)
7. Data Mining and Databases
8. Wireless Systems (Interdisciplinary with Electrical Engineering)
9. Integrated Embedded Systems (Interdisciplinary with Electrical Engineering)
10. Parallel and Cluster Computing (Interdisciplinary with College of Science)

Similarly, our revised Ph.D. program will include same concentration areas, and Ph.D. students should be able to select the corresponding courses and work on their Ph.D. Dissertations from these areas. The implementation time schedule is as follows:

1. Detailed Proposal prepared by the Graduate Committee April 10, 2005
2. Department’s, College, and University approvals August 1, 2005
3. Implementation should gradually begin Fall 2005
4. Full Implementation Spring 2006

International Programs

The program with Nirma University (India) has been resumed. The first group of undergraduate students is expected to be at FAU in Fall 2005. Dr. Vasani (on photo), President of Nirma University, visited FAU to discuss our collaboration. Our faculty are also teaching selected graduate seminars at Nirma University.

Agreements for several new programs are in the last phase of approval - with Amity University in India and Angeles University in Philippines.

Industry Advisory Board Activities

The Computer Science and Engineering Industry Advisory Board (IAB) consists of a selected group of technical and business executives who advise the department on educational and research issues, assist in curriculum development and improvement, and help to identify emerging areas of opportunity for education and research. Fall 2004 IAB meeting was held on November 19, 2004 with about 20 industry executives attending the meeting.

Industry Affiliates Program

The Industry Affiliates Program (IAP) is designed to provide an effective partnership between Florida Atlantic Universities Computer Science and Engineering Department and members of the IT industry, specifically the South Florida industry. The IAP provides organized sponsorship for research outside of traditional arrangements, such as sole sponsorship of specific projects. The program provides a mechanism for targeting broad capabilities and resources to problems of interest across a number of companies. The goals of our IAP program are to:

• Accelerate and streamline the interactions between faculty and industry researchers and scientists
• Increase the exposure of students to opportunities for internships and employment in leading companies as well as in startups, and
• Facilitate the transfer of technology developed by department faculty.

CSE Newsletters

The Department is regularly publishing its Newsletter, with the objective to inform faculty, students, professional friends, and industry partners on recent Department's academic and research activities. Spring 2005 CSE Newsletter is now available.
